Be Kind to One Another

January 14, 2022

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Eph 4:32). Outside of Christ we are still in our sin and in rebellion against God – hating one another and exalting self.  In Christ, however, we have forgiveness.  This is the good news of the gospel!  Jesus has taken our sins – he has taken the judgment for each and every sin of his people.  We have been forgiven by God because of what Jesus has done for us on the cross of Calvary.  Thus, we are called to show and to extend such forgiveness to others.  A forgiven heart…

He Loves Us to the End

December 23, 2021

John 13:1, “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of the world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” It is unquestionable that the Gospel of John is a glorious account of the life and the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. And although there are many similarities between John’s Gospel and the three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke), indeed John’s account does contain some unique features. For example, there are many events and teaching discourses in…

Hannah’s Prayer

December 16, 2021

1 Samuel 2:1-2, “And Hannah prayed and said, ‘My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. There is none holy like the Lord; there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.’” 1 Samuel 1-3 records the birth and call to ministry of the great man of God, Samuel. Samuel’s mother, Hannah, was barren for many years. Chapter 1, v. 10 says, “She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly.” Hannah was greatly burdened by her barrenness,…

Groaning to God

December 16, 2021

Exodus 2:23, “Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God.” God’s people are in slavery in Egypt. After enjoying some time of good favor and prosperity in this foreign land, “there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph” (Ex 1:8). And this began many years of harsh treatment and oppression (Ex 1:9-22). The Lord, however, was at work raising up a deliverer who would lead his people out of slavery. Through varying circumstances (see Ex 2:1-22), God was shaping and preparing Moses to be the one to lead his people from Egypt to the…

God is God

December 16, 2021

Psalm 131:1,“O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not raised too high; I do not occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.” God is God … and we are not! This truth is brought home in a succinct and straightforward way in Psalm 131 (one of the Psalms of Ascents, Ps 120-134). In this Psalm, David, while not giving us a technical definition of faith, does demonstrate one way in which true, Biblical faith ‘operates.’ David begins in v. 1, “O Lord, my heart is not lifted up; my eyes are not…

God Unchanging

November 18, 2021

Malachi 3:6, “For I the LORD do not change.” We live in a world of change. Our lives are filled with change. We change. Our relationships change. Our priorities change. Our jobs change. Our politicians change. Our pastors change. Our hometowns change. At times, such change can seem discouraging and overwhelming. Often our hearts ache for some permanence in this world. Is such constancy and permanence to be found? Indeed, there is one who does not change – the God of heaven and earth, the God of Israel, the one, true, and living God, does not and will never change.…

Giving Thanks

November 11, 2021

1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” With Thanksgiving season upon us, it is good to be reminded that we, as believers, are called to be thankful. The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Thess 5:18, “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” One psalm that perhaps could be helpful in guiding us in giving thanksgiving to the Lord is Psalm 136. The psalm opens this way: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for…
