“For the lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Rev 7:17). Jesus Christ is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.  He is the great Shepherd who loves and lays down his life for his sheep.  Revelation 7 gives us a symbolic picture of the care and protection that await Jesus’ sheep in glory.  Unto eternity, Jesus will guide and tend his sheep.  He will forever be in the midst of his sheep wiping away…

“ … by which [God] has granted to us his precious and very great promises …” (2 Peter 1:4). The God of the Bible – the one, true, and living God – is the God of the covenant. That is, he is the promise making and promise keeping God. He promised and has given his people life – true and everlasting life in Jesus Christ. Jesus himself is the resurrection and the life. Jesus tells us that he came that we might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). And brothers and sisters, there is nothing greater or more…

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8). Paul’s words in Romans 5:8 give us a one sentence summary of the good news of Christianity.  God loves sinners.  Such love finds its greatest expression in the cross of Christ.  On the cross, Jesus died ‘for’ sinners.  That is, he died as our substitute – he took the judgment, curse, and death we deserve.  Moreover, Christ did not die as our substitute because we were lovely; rather it was while we were still sinners that Christ laid down his life for us.  Christ died for…

Jesus said, “…. Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:19b). Jesus lives.  He lives at this very moment – reigning as king of kings from the right hand of his father.  He lived and died.  But death could not hold the sinless Son of God; thus Jesus rose in victory for our justification.  As Christians, we are united to Christ by Spirit-born and Spirit-gifted faith.  His life is our life – his victory is our victory – his resurrection is our resurrection.  As Paul will later explain in 1 Corinthians 15, Jesus rose as the firstfruits – the token, pledge, and model – of…

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you” (Is 26:3). There is much in the world – in our everyday experiences – that causes us anxiety.  There is much that shakes our certainty – that makes us fearful.  Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord in this verse tells us where we are to go to find peace.  We find peace in him.  God is our unchanging anchor in the storm.  He is our refuge and strength.  As our mind is stayed on the Lord – that is, as we commune by faith with our God and Savior…

“And Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today’” (Ex 14:13). Israel was on the banks of the Red Sea.  The water was before them, and the approaching Egyptian army was behind them.  What would they do?  They were stuck – at least, that is how it appeared from the word’s perspective.  But God would deliver them!  He would save his people with his mighty outstretched arm.  They need only be still and watch.  All they were called to do was follow the voice of the Lord and trust in his faithful…

“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Cor 1:18). Do you love the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ?  Does it nourish your soul?  Is it sweet to your ear?  Does the truth of Jesus Christ laying down his life for sinners and opening the way to forgiveness and eternal life in heaven stir your heart to joy and worship?  The gospel is the power of God to raise the spiritually dead unto new life in Christ.  There is no other power like the power…
