“And I sent messengers to them, saying, ‘I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave here and come down to you?’” (Nehemiah 6:3)
Nehemiah was doing a great work for the Lord. The great work he was doing was building a wall. Specifically, the great work was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem that had been destroyed by the Babylonians. This work would seem anything but great in the eyes of man, but it was most certainly great in the eyes of God. It was a great work because it was a work for the glory of God and for the good of the people of God, the church. In like manner, service in the church – whether visible or behind the scenes – is great in the eyes of God. The smallest act for the good of the body of Christ – though seen as unimportant in the world’s eyes – is a grand work in God’s eyes. Be encouraged, brothers and sisters, and press on in your service for the Lord. It is a grand work indeed!
